The Book of James: Daily Bible Study (James 1:5-8 NLT)
Today's Scripture...
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

Scripture Insights: In James 1:5-8, James is urging his readers to seek wisdom from God with faith and without doubt. He cautions against being divided in loyalty, as this can lead to instability and inconsistency, like a wave that is tossed and blown about by the wind. James advises that those who are divided in their loyalty, trying to live for both the world and for God, should not expect to receive anything from the Lord, as their divided loyalty reveals where their true allegiance lies. Instead, James encourages his readers to commit fully to living for God, trusting in him and seeking his wisdom with a sincere heart.
One of the most important aspects of being a follower of Jesus Christ is understanding that the enemy, the devil, wants you to live for the world and all of the temporary pleasures it has to offer. The devil does this because he knows that living for the world will ultimately lead you away from God and towards destructive behaviors that will harm your life. To try and distract you from the path of righteousness, the devil will use every influence at his disposal to try and lead you down this worldly path.
In contrast, Jesus wants you to follow him and to live your life according to the teachings of the Bible. This involves sacrifice, time, and effort, as well as allowing God to work on you through the power of the Holy Spirit that lives within you. As you continue to live for the word and nourish your spirit, Jesus will help you overcome the old habits and behaviors that have held you back. Through him, you can overcome all of the worldly temptations that the enemy has been trying to keep you in bondage to.
Finally, it's important to remember that as believers in Jesus Christ, we are living in this earthly world, but we are not completely of this world. Our true home is in heaven with God, and we have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. As children of the most high God, we have the same spirit that resurrected Jesus from the dead living within us, empowering us to live for him and represent him in this world.
We are also a chosen race, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation, called by God to be his people and to live for him. This is a wonderful privilege and responsibility, and we should strive to live in a way that reflects the greatness of God and the calling he has placed on our lives. (Additional scripture reading: 1 Peter 2:9)
